Back pain treatment in Crystal Palace
Hands-on osteopathic treatment for back pain at the clinic on Westow Hill, SE19. Same-week appointments. No GP referral needed.
What we treat
Back pain is the most common reason patients come to Crystal Palace Osteopathy. Around eighty percent of adults will experience back pain at some point in their life, and most of it — mechanical back pain — responds very well to osteopathic treatment. Virginia treats:
- Acute lower back pain
- Chronic lower back pain
- Sciatica and trapped nerves
- Disc-related symptoms
- Upper back and shoulder pain
- Postural problems
- Work-related desk strain
- Pregnancy-related back pain
- Pain after lifting or sport
- Whiplash recovery
How osteopathy works for back pain
Osteopathy is recognised by the Institute of Osteopathy as an established system of diagnosis and treatment for painful conditions. Treatment is hands-on and built around the principle that pain is usually a sign that the structure or movement of the body has gone wrong somewhere — not always at the spot where it hurts.

A full conversation
How did the pain start, what makes it worse, what you've tried, your medical history, and what your day-to-day life looks like.
-
Examination
Posture, movement, neurological and orthopaedic testing as appropriate. Virginia is trained to spot anything that needs a GP or scan rather than osteopathy.
-
Treatment
Soft-tissue massage, articulation, joint mobilisation and gentle stretching, chosen specifically for what's driving your pain. Most patients leave noticeably more comfortable and moving more freely.

A plan
An honest estimate of how many sessions you'll need, plus a small set of tailored home exercises so you keep improving between visits.
How long does it take to feel better?
Acute back pain (the kind that came on this week) usually responds quickly — many patients feel meaningful change after one or two sessions. Long-standing or recurring back pain typically takes three to six sessions, with you noticing improvement at each appointment. Severe or complex cases may need more.
The honest truth: not every back pain responds to osteopathy. If your symptoms aren't changing the way they should, we will tell you, and we will refer onward to your GP, an MRI scan or another practitioner where appropriate. We never recommend more sessions than you need.
When to see a GP, not an osteopath
Most back pain is mechanical and safe to treat with osteopathy. A few warning signs need urgent medical attention rather than waiting for an appointment:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Numbness around the saddle area (groin / inner thighs)
- Sudden severe weakness in both legs
- Severe pain after a fall, car accident or trauma
- Unexplained fever with back pain
- Unexplained weight loss with back pain
If you're not sure, text Virginia first. She'll tell you whether to book or to see your GP.
